Hey Keron, good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words...
I'm getting ready for a studio visit, happening tomorrow, I'll post those CB recipes when it's over.
I always mix medium into my paint. I think it makes for stronger layers.
I start off with just stand oil, usually low-viscosity from Natural Pigments. As I build up layers I may add some CB to the stand oil, or some Copal medium from James Groves, depending on what I need the paint to do. The results I get are mostly brushwork though.

Hi Richard. Love your site! Yes please post recipes for mediums. This one does sound intriguing so I will likely mix some up since I have a small bottle of SP Congo Copal concentrate and plenty of Canada Balsam.
A couple of questions, do you dip and mix or mix the medium into the paint nuts?
Also are you using the copal on stretched linen or only on solid substrates?
Okay maybe more than a couple of questions ~ do you use the same concentration of medium in all layers of paint?
Thanks and, again, beautiful work ~ especially the figurative stuff ~ very inspiring!

Hi Marsha, and thanks! Hope all is well.

Yes, the frame is painted around the sides of the panel, which were gessoed. I've got it wired to the braces in the back and it hangs well on the wall. I wasn't sure how it would look, but it seems to work. I didn't pay much attention to the titles, I think the shell you refer to is a bursa bobo, but I'm not positive.

Beautiful, Rich!

I assume the frame is painted in the first one - how is it presented on the wall - in otherwords how is it framed?

That is certainly an unusual shell in the third painting -does it have a name? (In fact, wish you had included the Titles with these- perhaps they are listed within the site?)
Great work, as usual...good luck with the show!

Thanks so much, Marsha. It was a challenge, not least because having 7-foot ceilings and not much floor space meant I was unable to get more than three feet away from the painting -- until it was in the gallery. Too late to fix anything then!

(Can't comment on your front page, so will do it here)

This painting goes on my list of favorites paintings of all time, Richard. Looks fantastic in the window and the photo itself at Arcadia really showcases your site. Thanks for painting it!

There is nothing overtly sexual about these images. They are quite sensual on the other hand, though not in the erotic sense of the word. Classic.
On another note I agree totally with your sentiments about JC Groves and his mediums. Top notch in both respects.

Richard,
Is there a way on your site that I can change my password to something that I will remember?

Also, this change to requiring a login is new. May I ask why? Just curious about the reason.

Keep up the great work,
John

Hi Michael,

I use very little solvent, so it's not an issue I worry about, but it comes up in shared studio situations. Lots of people do worry about solvent exposure and over long periods a sensitivity can develop. (As I'm sure you know.)

Hi, this was an interesting post, yet it still fails to answer the question of, how easy or hard is it to get a solvent concentration of 200ppm in a closed room?

I guess that's your point, that knowing the safe exposure limit of a compound really doesn't tell us anything useful.
