I did this painting of Southport Harbor for a friend’s 50th birthday. It’s his favorite spot in the world, and he tells me he’d like to be buried there. If only it wasn’t on the edge of the golf course…

This is the first landscape I did, and it took forever because I didn’t understand the relativity of color until I started studying with Graydon. This is one of my favorite spots, on a windy hill in Sanford Farms on Nantucket. I’ve gone there at many times of day, from dawn to late evening. It’s just beautiful. I mean the location, not the painting.

Every morning on Nantucket I go surfing. Even if it’s not firing the beach is so heartbreaking at dawn. Cold, too. This painting is from one of those early mornings, too dark to go in the water yet.

Every morning after surfing, on my way back to town, I would see this cow. One day I got there just as sun was cresting the tree line. She was slowly eating her way across the field while waiting to be milked. She was tolerant of me getting close and spending time with her.
